Timothy Dupont has won the penultimate stage of the ZLM Tour, beating Olav Kooij and Elia Viviani.
The 196-km stage to Mierlo came down to a bunch sprint, which Dupont won after a good lead-out of his teammates of Bingoal-Pauwels Sauzes. For Dupont it was an emotional win after losing three of his loved ones in only one month.
“In only one month, I lost my dad and both of my parents-in-law. I’m, of course, still grieving. But you have no other option but to move on. I’m glad to be on the bike again. Cycling helpt me dealing with it. Also physically it’s been hard. I’m still suffering from my left hip after my crash in Nokere last year. Thanks to dry needling I can relax my muscles, which is the only thing that helps. Yet, it’s important to keep winning races and to keep the spirits high as the team leader.”
“Winning in the ZLM Tour is good for the morale. I was ablo to show my fast legs agein. I’ve always kept training seriously and, I know, that those people up there gave me strength.”
