Laurens Sweeck claimed his second win of the season in the space of only a week by outsprinting Toon Aerts in Leuven. On Wednesday, Sweeck already triumphed in the Jaarmarktcross in Niel. Today, he outsprinted 3-time winner Aerts after a smart and tactictal ride at the third round of the Ethias Cross.
Sweeck and Aerts immediately hit the front, distancing themselves from the rest of the field. Sweeck was in the most comfortable position as his teammates were chasing behind. Aerts managed to maintain the gap to sprint for victory with Sweeck, but didn’t have the power to take his third successive victory in Leuven.
“We played the numbers game in good effect. Toon wanted me to ride and extend the gap, but I didn’t see any reason to take over. It was a fair game. Besides, It"s not always an advantage to ride in second position. When you make a technical mistake, you can lose precious time. But at the finish line, I was perfectly protected from the headwind after Toon’s back."
"I wanted to try something in the finale, but Toon was too strong. So I didn’t hesitate in the sprint and went full gas in the final straight. Two victories in only 1 week … I can’t remember when I managed to achieve such a result!"
