Wout van Aert immediately lived up to his status of pre-race favourite and won the Omloop het Nieuwsblad on Saturday. The Belgian Champion pushed the gear on the day’s final climb to cross the line solo.

The finale began at the Berendries with around 30 kilometers to go, when the big names put in attacks. Yet, no one managed to create a gap and everything came together again at the Muur of Geraardsbergen.

At the foot of the Bosberg, however, Wout van Aert attacked and no one was able to follow. In the final 12 km, Van Aert demonstrated his time trial skills as no rider could brigde to the Belgian Champion. The Belgian Champion crossed the line solo, making his 2022 road debut in impressive fashion.

Wout van Aert:

"Tiesj and I tried to attack after the Berendries. I know it's always quiet before the Bosberg, so I wanted to take an advantage there. At the top, I still had a nice gap, so I decided to go full gas. I gave everything and fortunately, this tactic worked. The wind was a disadvantage, so maybe that's why it stayed closed for a long time. My teammates deserve big compliments because we controlled the race at all times. And of course, I am delighted to finish first."

"I've had a good preparation, but I didn't expect it to go so well right away. It's great that I won this race. I could still do better in terms of race intensity, because you need this for classics like the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. I want to take that step in Paris-Nice.”
