No better way to start 2022 than with a brilliant victory. Wout van Aert took his 7th win in a row, beating Tom Pidcock after an intense battle at GP Sven Nys. Toon Aerts continues to lead the X2O Badkamers Trofee standing at the midway point of the eight-round series.
On New Year’s Day, Wout van Aert recorded his 7th season victory. Despite having problems with his shoes after a crash, he still managed to cross the line solo in first place.
Wout van Aert:
"Looking back on today’s race, it's nice that it was so exciting, but I didn't see it that way during the race itself. That problem with my shoe made it extra difficult for me. This win gives me a little bit more relief. That is partly due to my opponents. I wasn't riding against just anyone – you know who you're up against. Fortunately, I was able to use my strength, so I kept getting closer to Tom (Pidcock) each time. As we went into the final laps, my plan was to strike. On the steep uphill section, I gave everything on the last lap, and it worked.”
“Tomorrow the World Cup round in Hulst awaits. With good food, a good night’s sleep and a massage, I hope to be at the start with good legs. It’s going to be a tough race again. These are busy weeks, but I’m looking forward to it.”
