Incredible performance of Wout in the individual time trial of the Critérium du Dauphiné this afternoon, taking his first WorldTour win!
The 4th stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné saw the riders tackle a 26.1 kilometers hilly time trial in Rouanne. The route suited Wout’s skills perfectly as he won the time trial with an advantage of 31 seconds over Tejay van Garderen and 47 seconds over Tom Dumoulin.
Wout settled into his rhythm quickly and passed the first intermediate checkpoint at 11.5 km with the quickest time, 18 seconds up on Dumoulin. The rider of Jumbo - Visma kicked it up another gear in the second part to finish in a time of 33:38, pulverizing the provisional best time set by Vice World Champion TT Tom Dumoulin. Tejay Van Garderen became Wouts nearest rival, but had to settle for second place.
“I can’t believe it. The team and I worked hard on my time trial skills in the past weeks, but I didn’t know I could win at this level”, Wout said immediately after the final rider crossed the line. “We did the recon this morning and I knew the route suited my skills. I suffered. You always suffer during a time trial, but it was worth it.”
Obviously, Wout retained his Green and White Jersey today and proves, once again, to be more much than a cyclo-cross champion.
